LED Signs The Environmental Choice
LED is actually an abbreviation and is short for Light Emitting Diode. Different to traditional light bulbs, or halogen neon lights, LEDs work in a completely unique way, using electroluminescence to produce light (rather than light bulbs, which rely largely on inert gases, such as nitrogen, to prevent the filament from burning; or halogen tubes which rely on the very expensive halogen gas). They do this by forcing electrons to produce photons by creating electron holes within the light itself, which the electrons then recombine with. The discovery was first made way back in 1907 by a British inventor and physicist called H. J. Round. Although the science may sound complicated, really it was very clever and ground breaking discovery in physics and a fantastic invention in the production of more environmentally sustainable light. Today, LED lights come in many and varied shapes and sizes. Vitally, LEDs can vary drastically in terms of quality. Although, generally speaking LEDs will last longer than traditional light bulbs, there is a lot of variance within LEDs themselves. Fortunately, flashingledboard.com only use the very highest quality LED lights, which guarantee lasting brightness and durability, even if left switched on for lengthy periods of time. Because LEDs do not use electricity to heat a metal filament, as light bulbs do, they are also a safer and more cost effective form of light. LED lights do not become hot like light bulbs. For a business owner, who has just purchased an LED board, this is clearly good news as hot devices within a place of business can be hazardous to customers and cause insurance problems. Furthermore, lights which depend on unsustainable gases to function have a substantially negative impact on the environment – gases must be used in vast quantities in their production, and are then wastefully released into the environment when the bulb is disposed of. In terms of powering and LED board of sign, LED lights require far less power, relative to the brightness of the light produced, than many other light sources. Keeping an LED sign plugged in overnight, for example, will have little effect on a monthly energy bill. In fact, many models of LED boards and signs can run on rechargeable batteries. This has obvious benefits for your wallet as well as for the environment. Buying batteries is expensive and batteries contain harmful acids and chemicals which damage the environment – with rechargeable batteries, you only need to buy once. Though LED lights are very bright and eye catching, they do not contribute to light pollution in the same way as many other light sources. Though LED light is bright to the eye, it produces practically no glare or reflected (or wasted light) – it is this type of reflective light that adds to light pollution in cities. This has the added benefit for business owners that LED signs work very well in store windows – the light will penetrate sharply through the glass, without creating distraction and blurring reflections.
